When Puppet emergency support fits
This service is for a concrete, time-sensitive problem: Puppet Server is unavailable, catalogs no longer compile, agents fail after a change, certificates block communication, a deployment pipeline is broken, or a performance regression is affecting production operations.
The first objective is not to produce a long assessment. It is to understand the failure mode, reduce the operational risk, and find the shortest safe path to recovery. Once the immediate issue is controlled, we identify the underlying cause and the work needed to prevent a recurrence.
Problems we can investigate
- Puppet Server startup, availability, memory, JRuby, or catalog compilation failures.
- Agent runs failing across a fleet or on specific operating systems.
- Certificate Authority, certificate renewal, trust, and SSL communication problems.
- PuppetDB connectivity, report processing, query, or performance issues.
- Broken control-repository deployments, CI pipelines, environments, or module dependencies.
- Unexpected changes, dependency cycles, duplicate resources, lookup failures, and difficult catalog errors.
- Upgrade regressions involving Puppet, Puppet Server, PuppetDB, Ruby extensions, modules, or operating-system packages.
If the issue is outside Puppet itself, the investigation can follow the dependency into Linux, networking, Java, PostgreSQL, Git, CI, packaging, or the surrounding automation stack.
How the engagement works
Send a concise description of the impact, the affected components, what changed before the failure, and any relevant error output. If availability permits, we arrange a call and work through the incident using screen sharing.
For production systems, your team retains control: you evaluate the advice and execute changes. This keeps access, authorization, and operational responsibility within your organization while still giving you direct expert guidance. Logs, configuration, and code can be reviewed together without transferring broad infrastructure access.
The session normally follows four steps:
- Establish scope, impact, and the last known good state.
- Collect the smallest useful set of evidence rather than changing multiple variables at once.
- Test the leading hypothesis and apply a reversible remediation.
- Verify recovery, document the cause, and identify any follow-up work.
What you leave with
The useful outcome may be a completed fix, a safe workaround, or a precise diagnosis and remediation plan. If the problem reveals broader technical debt, the follow-up can move into Smart Puppet Support or a full Puppet Health Check.
If the session neither solves the problem nor provides useful direction toward a solution, there is nothing to pay.
Have an urgent Puppet problem?
Describe the impact and include the most relevant error message so we can assess urgency quickly.
